Message Sequence Chart (MSC) - A Survey of the new CCITT Language for the Description to Traces within Communications Systems
نویسندگان
چکیده
Message Sequence Charts (MSCs) are a widespread means for description and graphical visualisation of selected system runs within distributed systems, especially telecommunication systems. Various kinds of MSCs with similar expressive power are used frequently within industry and standardisation bodies. Therefore, the CCITT (Comité Consultatif International Télégraphique et Téléphonique) attempts to harmonise their use by means of the new standard language Message Sequence Chart (MSC) in 1992 [Z120]. This paper presents a motivation for the MSC standardisation. The history of the standardisation process is briefly sketched. The MSC language is introduced. Some language constructs which may need further elaboration are pointed out and possible enhancements are proposed. Finally, an approach towards the definition of a clear MSC semantics is described.

The Standardization of Message Sequence Charts
In this paper the most relevant issues of the standardization of the Message Sequence Chart (MSC) language within the CCITT Study Group X are discussed. The history of the new MSC recommendation Z.120 is sketched. Diierent types of diagrams which are closely related to MSCs are compared, since they build the basis for the MSC language. We distinguish these diagrams from the standardized MSC lan...
متن کاملDeciding Properties for Message Sequence Charts
Message sequence charts (MSC) are commonly used in designing communication systems. They allow describing the communication skeleton of a system and can be used for nding design errors. First, a speciication formalism that is based on MSC graphs, combining nite message sequence charts, is presented. We present then an automatic validation algorithm for systems described using the message sequen...
متن کاملTTCN-3 Test Case Generation from Message Sequence Charts
Scenario-based testing, manual as automatic, is applicable for black-box and specific white-box testing for communication protocols and distributed systems. UML models provide scenario descriptions by sequence diagrams respectively MSCs. Thus, the combination of TTCN-3, as test description language, and UML by MSC to specify and automatically generate test cases has to be considered. The work i...
متن کاملAn algebraic semantics of Message Sequence Charts
Message Sequence Charts is a graphical and textual language for the description and speciication of the interactions between system components and their environment. The language is standardized by the ITU-TS (the Telecommunication Standardization section of the International Telecommunication Union, the former CCITT). The main area of application for Message Sequence Charts is as an overview s...
متن کاملMessage Sequence Graphs and Decision Problems on Mazurkiewicz Traces
Message sequence charts (MSC) are a graphical speciica-tion language widely used for designing communication protocols. Our starting point are two decision problems concerning the correctness and the consistency of a design based by MSC graphs. Both problems are shown to be undecidable, in general. Using a natural connectivity assumption from Mazurkiewicz trace theory we show both problems to b...
